We conduct activities year-round, with our current focus on fishing, hunting, camping and boating. We are working on offering metal detecting in the near future. We lease several farms, and have access to other private land thanks to the support of generous landowners.
Additionally we fish many of the public lakes in the central North Carolina area. In 2025 we anticipate being able to provide several outings in other states as well. As our donor and volunteer base grows, we look forward to expanding our impact to a greater number of deserving service members.
From unforgettable outdoor experiences to the emotional connections forged, these stories inspire us to continue our mission of honoring and supporting our military heroes.
VHO made us slow down and sent our family to the coast of NC where we were able to see bears in the wild and spent a day with a local family on their boat tubing. To this day, these are some of the best memories my kids have with us. It brings tears to my eyes writing this because it was so nice going on this trip and not worrying how it would be paid for. We didn't think about work, bills, or anything other than just spending time with our kids.
I've had the wonderful opportunity to participate in VHO duck hunts in Arkansas the last two years. The trips, though different, left me a better man than I came, with a heart full of brotherhood and shared service. The relaxing fellowship we were able to experience in the woods hunting, on the couch in the cabin, or in cars together is the kind of cathartic salve we Veterans and active Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines need to help remind us why we serve.
While some people search and find VHO, in my case VHO found me. I’m not sure where I’d be without Col. Lewis and VHO but I do know I wouldn’t be where I am or who I am without them. I’ve been a first responder for going on 14 years now and just driving down the road can be an incredibly difficult and painful thing to do. I’m constantly reminded of the vehicle accidents, structure fires, drownings etc. as I vividly remember every detail about the sights, sounds and smells. I’ve known Col. Lewis for years and hunted with him many times, but when he brought me into the VHO family something changed in me. Just getting out in the woods is a healing opportunity for me and getting out with Col. Lewis and the guys is my therapy.
I’ve been selected for a couple of organizations to go hunting, and once at the location, I was just told to go here or there and there wasn’t any conversation or fellowship. It was a number thing. VHO provided free hunting clothes from head to toe and their staff was engaged, start to finish. VHO is different.
Valor and Honor Outdoors is not only a group of veterans putting on great opportunities but an atmosphere of high morals and mentorship. Attending the Valor and Honor turkey hunt was an opportunity that I will never forget. During my experience I spent time hunting with great people and sharing stories about our experiences in the military.
I cannot even begin to express how amazing Valor & Honor Outdoors has been. My first experience with VHO was a few months prior to my deployment to the Middle East. My 2 children are 4 and 5, and they absolutely love fishing. We spent the entire day on the boat with one of VHO’s volunteers. The smiles on their faces reeling in big catches are the type that make hearts melt. It was a day of beautiful views, great fishing and lots of laughter.
My children and I had the roughest year of our lives starting the day after I returned from deployment. VHO brought tears to my eyes when they surprised us with our trip. My children and I made many core memories and had the best time getting away from the difficult year we had faced.
After a very challenging year with a deployment, my mother getting sick, and what I felt like insurmountable stress, I was struggling to stay spiritually on track. From the minute I showed up at camp and met Mike, I felt instant brotherhood and belonging. After only a couple days, the stress I had been dealing with for the past year just disappeared and a very clear way ahead appeared to me.
After being a participant for years, I came onboard as a VHO staff member, and it has been very fulfilling being able to facilitate VHO experiences for others. I am so thankful for the opportunities VHO provided for me as a participant, and now I am thankful for the opportunity to give back as a Field Staff volunteer!
